ANCIENT ROME
Ancient Rome is well known for its architecture, much of which remains to this day. The most famous structures from the Roman Empire are things like the Colosseum, the Circus Maximus, and the Pantheon. In MinecraftEdu class, we will focus on the houses where people from Ancient Rome lived. One type of house was called a "domus", and this would be where people that were relatively wealthy lived. As the Empire gained wealth, these houses of the upper classes became more and more lavish, sometimes with dozens of rooms and amenities. Other Romans lived in what we would call apartment buildings, and they called "insulae". These were not too different from apartments today, although they were usually quite cramped and dark, and did not have the comforts of a "domus" house.
Try to create a "domus" or "insulae" of your own in Minecraft! Romans generally used stone for their buildings, and a "domus" would include an indoor pool area as well as an indoor garden.

ancient egypt
One of the other ancient civilizations most famous for their architecture, the ancient Egyptians were prolific and ingenious builders. Everyone knows the pyramids, and the Egyptians also built beautiful and durable temples and statues (like the Sphinx). In MinecraftEdu class, we will recreate the homes of average Egyptians, which were made of mud bricks. The Egyptians would gather mud from the banks of the Nile and use a wooden form to dry it into hard bricks in the very hot sun (a method still used, effectively, to this day!). These homes were pretty small, usually only one or two rooms. If they had a second floor, they would often keep their farmed crops on the bottom and sleep on the top floor- or on the roof if it was really really hot.
Make an Egyptian hut of your own in Minecraft! I recommend using yellow clay bricks, as they most closely resemble the mud bricks the Egyptians would have used.
